Sexism in gaming has been a hot topic this year and, while I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a feminist, it’s obviously a subject that strikes a chord with me as I’m a female. So I had to laugh when I came across this late yesterday evening.
The event that ignited the feminism debate was the release of Tropes vs Women on YouTube by creator Anita Saarkeesian in March. Then there was Mike Mika, chief creative officer at Other Ocean Interactive, who hacked Donkey Kong (review coming soon) when his three-year-old daughter couldn’t understand why she couldn’t play as Pauline. And to top it off there was ‘that rape joke’ during Microsoft’s demonstration of an Xbox One launch title at this year’s E3 expo in June.
These cases have obviously given both feminists and non-feminists a lot to write about and we’ve even featured an article on the subject here at 1001-Up.com. So when I saw yesterday that another gaming website we follow had written their own piece, I was interested in hearing their opinions on the matter. However, I don’t think that their choice of advertisement after their article was necessarily the right one…
Ok, so the website owners may not have control over ads or realised what was being featured on that particular page. But it’s a shame because the writer obviously had good intentions and his views have now been somewhat undermined by a badly-placed and inappropriately-pictured commercial. Still, at least they’re getting their click-through cash eh?
